An Unexpected Journey to Corfu
The most wonderful moments in travel are rarely the ones you plan for. They are the ones that catch you completely off guard.
On the way from Meteora to Corfu Island, the tour bus slowly pulled into a port. Passengers began to sense that something unusual was happening. A large ferry was docked ahead, and the tour guide said, in a perfectly calm voice: "We're driving on."
Nobody had seen that coming.
The engine of the bus rumbled loudly across the metal deck as the view outside the windows shifted from land to steel and sea. The entire bus rolled straight into the belly of the ship and came to a stop on the car deck, as if by some impossible magic trick. Passengers looked at each other in disbelief. Some grabbed their phones and started filming. Others burst out laughing. That feeling of pure, unplanned surprise is something no carefully designed itinerary could ever deliver.
What Is a Roll-on/Roll-off Ferry?
This type of vessel is called a Roll-on/Roll-off Ferry, which allows vehicles to drive directly into the ship without any loading or unloading equipment. The crossing from the port of Igoumenitsa on the Greek mainland to Corfu takes about ninety minutes across the Ionian Sea. But for first-time passengers experiencing this for the first time, those ninety minutes became one of the most unforgettable moments of the entire trip.

Corfu at First Sight: The Sea and the Night
By the time the ferry arrived at Corfu, night had quietly fallen. The first thing travelers did after stepping onto the island was not check into the hotel or open a map. They walked to the sea.
The Ionian Sea at night was gentler than anyone had imagined. A breeze carrying the faint scent of salt drifted softly across their faces. Distant lights reflected off the calm surface of the water, shimmering like scattered stars. Waves rolled in slowly and quietly, and each time they pulled back from the shore, it felt like a soft sigh in the middle of the night.
In Meteora, we had looked upward toward the sky, feeling the distance between humans and the divine. Here on the shore of Corfu, we looked straight out to the horizon, and felt a completely different kind of vastness — not the towering grandeur of rock and cloud, but something wide and quiet, flowing endlessly without a boundary in sight.
That evening, nothing much was done. There was only the sea, and standing there looking at it. Yet somehow, it became the fullest and most contented night of the entire journey.
