On September 13, 110,000 people took to the streets in the UK to participate in a march organized by the far-right group "Unite the Kingdom." Their demands included stricter immigration controls and freedom of speech. However, there were many anti-Muslim and nationalist flags and slogans at the scene, making it one of the largest far-right demonstrations in modern British history.

On the other hand, there was a counter-protest called "Stand Up to Racism" with about 5,000 people. The police kept both sides separated.

Tesla founder Elon Musk also participated in this anti-immigration protest through video call. He spoke to the crowd through a large screen broadcast, saying: "Violence is coming to you. You either fight back or wait to die." He said that the UK needs "revolutionary government change."

The UK's immigration problem has not developed recently. Since Brexit, the British government has been trying to control immigration numbers, but with limited success.

According to official data, by June 2025, 49,341 immigrants had "illegally entered" the UK from France by small boats, a record high number. In Prime Minister Starmer's first year in office, the number of asylum seekers reached a record 111,084 people, almost double the 2021 figure. In 2025 alone, more than 27,000 people entered illegally by small boats, about 50% higher than the same period last year.

More worrying is the economic burden. According to BBC reports, the British government spends about £5.77 million daily on asylum hotels. This cost is expected to reach £15.3 billion by 2029. The French government claims that illegal immigrants find it relatively easy to seek "undocumented work" in the UK and can avoid paying taxes, making the UK more attractive to asylum seekers than other European countries.

In early July 2025, a shocking sexual assault case completely ignited British public anger. An asylum seeker from Ethiopia was charged with three counts of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and encouraging underage girls to engage in sexual activities. This asylum seeker was living at the Bell Hotel in the Epping area, which is used as temporary housing for refugees waiting for asylum application reviews.

After the case was revealed, local residents' anger quickly grew. Many parents worried about their children's safety and began questioning the government's policy of placing large numbers of asylum seekers who had not undergone strict background checks near communities.

Starting from July 17, angry local residents began surrounding the Bell Hotel in protest. Initially, the protests were relatively peaceful, but as the number of participants increased and emotions intensified, the situation gradually got out of control. Protesters shouted slogans like "Save our children," "Send them home," and "Protect our community," demanding the immediate removal of all asylum seekers from the hotel.

As the protests continued, conflicts began to escalate. Angry demonstrators started attacking police officers maintaining order with bottles, stones, and other objects. Police were forced to use riot equipment and tear gas to control the situation. Several police officers were injured in the conflicts, and dozens of protesters were arrested.

After a month of protests, Epping Forest District Council decided to take legal action. In mid-August, the council successfully applied to London's High Court for a temporary injunction requiring the Bell Hotel owner to remove all asylum seekers from the premises by September 12. The court approved this application, reasoning that the presence of asylum seekers posed a threat to local community safety.

This legal victory was like throwing a stone into a calm lake, creating ripples across the nation. Anti-immigration groups and local residents across the country saw hope, believing they could solve the asylum seeker problem through legal means. Residents in Oxford, Bournemouth, Leeds, Brighton, Manchester, and other cities began copying this approach, organizing similar protest activities in their own communities and trying to push local governments to apply for similar legal injunctions.

In this wave of anti-immigration sentiment, far-right activist Tommy Robinson (real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon) keenly sensed a political opportunity. As the former leader of the anti-immigration organization English Defense League, Robinson had rich experience in street politics. He had been imprisoned for defaming a Syrian refugee, but this experience actually increased his reputation in far-right circles.

Robinson began heavily promoting on social media, describing the Epping incident as "a symbol of British society's collapse" and "evidence of the government's betrayal of the people." He cleverly connected individual criminal cases with overall immigration policy, claiming this was just "the tip of the iceberg" and that more dangers were lurking.

After weeks of online mobilization and organizational preparation, Robinson announced he would hold a large rally called "Unite the Kingdom" on September 13. He packaged this event as a "Freedom of Speech Festival," claiming to speak out for "truths suppressed by the government."

On the day of the rally, London's streets witnessed the largest far-right demonstration in British history. According to BBC reports, nearly 150,000 people came from across the country to participate in the march. The composition of demonstrators was quite complex, including angry local residents, professional far-right activists, large numbers of young "football hooligans," and nationalists.

The march featured many flags, including British flags and St. George's Cross flags, as well as American flags, Israeli flags, and some people wearing "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) hats. Demonstrators held various signs including "Deport all illegal immigrants," "Stop the boats," "Britain First," "Protect our children," and "Starmer out."

In his emotional speech, Robinson declared: "Today is the spark of Great Britain's cultural revolution. This is our moment! We will no longer be silent, no longer be held hostage by political correctness!" He also frequently paid tribute to the late American extreme conservative activist Charlie Kirk, and the event even held a moment of silence for Kirk.

One of the most notable features of this rally was the widespread participation of international far-right figures. Tesla CEO Elon Musk gave a video speech through a large screen, attacking British left-wing parties as "murder parties" and calling on British people to "dissolve parliament" and "vote again." Musk's comments were highly inflammatory, warning the crowd: "Violence is coming to you. You either fight back or wait to die. Britain needs revolutionary government change."

French far-right politician Eric Zemmour and German AfD European Parliament member Petr Bystron also gave speeches via video, describing Britain's immigration problem as a "common threat to European civilization." This international cooperation demonstrated the transnational nature of contemporary far-right movements.

Although organizers claimed this was a "peaceful rally," violent conflicts quickly broke out. Some radical demonstrators began attacking police, throwing stones, bottles, and other objects. Police had to use riot equipment, water cannons, and tear gas to control the situation.

In the conflicts, about 26 police officers were injured, with several seriously hurt and requiring hospitalization. Police eventually arrested 24 protesters on charges including assaulting police officers, violent behavior, and inciting violence. Some demonstrators also smashed windows at the center-left Democratic 66 (D66) party headquarters, causing serious property damage.

Facing large-scale far-right mobilization, groups supporting immigrants and multiculturalism quickly organized counter-activities. About 5,000 people participated in a counter-rally called "Stand Up to Racism," holding signs saying "Refugees Welcome," "Diversity Makes Us Stronger," and "Against Racism."

Senior Labour MP Diane Abbott gave a passionate speech at the counter-rally, condemning Robinson and his allies for "spreading lies and hatred" and calling on British people to "unite against division and discrimination." She emphasized: "Britain's greatness lies not in excluding others, but in inclusion and diversity."

Police carefully separated the two opposing rallies to avoid direct conflicts, but the tense atmosphere throughout central London remained heavy.

Facing such a large-scale far-right demonstration, the British government's response seemed quite cautious and divided. Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a statement afterward, condemning attacks on police and racist harassment while also stating: "People have the right to peaceful protest. This is at the core of our national values."

Business Secretary Peter Kyle's position was more subtle. He believed the marchers demonstrated "freedom of association and speech" while calling on people to be wary of being "exploited by people like Tommy Robinson who use anxious emotions."

Regarding Musk's inflammatory comments, the Prime Minister's spokesperson clearly criticized them as "dangerous and inflammatory" but rejected Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey's proposal to sanction Musk, reasoning that "freedom of speech must be protected."

Various polling data revealed deep divisions in British society over immigration issues. Research firm Ipsos reports show that immigration has become the most important political issue for British people, surpassing economy and healthcare. More than 31% of respondents believe their area is hosting "far more than its fair share" of asylum seekers.

More worryingly, YouGov polls show that more than 70% of respondents are dissatisfied with Labour's strategy for handling immigration issues, believing the government is "too weak" and "lacks determination." Even 40% of respondents said they "understand" the anger of anti-immigration demonstrators, although they don't support violent behavior.

Getty Images)

Facing the continued rise in far-right support, mainstream British political parties all felt enormous pressure and began adjusting their positions to cater to public opinion.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage proposed an extremely radical reform plan on August 23. He promised that if he won the next general election, he would conduct "mass deportation operations" of illegal immigrants arriving by small boats and completely withdraw Britain from the European Convention on Human Rights. Farage also proposed signing agreements with Afghanistan, Eritrea, and other countries to forcibly return all illegal immigrants, "regardless of their personal circumstances."

The Conservative Party's reaction was equally radical. Party leader Kemi Badenoch started a special committee in June to review whether Britain should withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights. Voices within the Conservative Party believe the convention has become "the biggest obstacle to effective immigration control."

Even the ruling Labour Party began moving rightward. In March, the Labour government began seeking changes to the European Convention on Human Rights. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper confirmed to the BBC that the government would review Article 8 of the convention, which protects "the right to respect for private and family life" and is often used by immigrants to apply for family reunification or resist deportation.

Facing enormous political pressure, the British government was forced to adopt a series of tough measures to respond to public opinion. On September 1, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced that Britain would suspend accepting new refugee family reunification applications, with new rules to be formally implemented next spring.

To further combat illegal immigration, the government also proposed a controversial digital ID plan. Under this plan, every job seeker must provide digital identity proof showing they have legal residence status before they can get job opportunities. Critics believe this will violate privacy rights and civil liberties.

The British government also promised to stop using hotels to house political asylum seekers by 2029 and signed a "one-in, one-out" immigration agreement with France in July. Under this agreement, for every illegal immigrant arriving in Britain by boat who is sent back to France, France will allow one person legally applying for asylum in France to enter Britain, thus reducing the number of illegal immigrants crossing the English Channel by small boats.

Additionally, the government plans to reform the asylum appeals process, establishing an independent adjudication body to handle asylum appeals to speed up the processing of political asylum cases and reduce backlogged cases.

However, the government's efforts failed to calm public anger. On August 29, the Court of Appeal made an unexpected ruling, overturning the temporary injunction against the Bell Hotel and allowing asylum seekers to continue living there. The judge stated in the ruling that if protest activities were allowed to be used to obtain legal injunctions, it could "encourage others to follow suit, creating further risk of encouraging disregard for the law."

This ruling once again angered anti-immigration activists, who believed the judicial system had also been "infiltrated by left-wing ideology." Protest activities not only did not stop but further spread to more cities and regions.

A large-scale anti-immigration demonstration broke out in The Hague, Netherlands on the 20th local time. Protesters blocked highways and had violent conflicts with police. During the event, protesters threw stones and bottles, and police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse them. A police car was also burned, 30 people were arrested, and 2 police officers were injured.

BBC reported that the Dutch News Agency (ANP) quoted police sources saying that about 1,500 people blocked a highway that crosses the city. The demonstration was organized by a right-wing activist. Their demands included implementing stricter immigration policies and strengthening actions against asylum seekers. Large numbers of protesters waved Dutch flags and flags related to far-right groups, confronting security forces.

Protesters smashed the windows of the center-left party Democratic 66 (D66) headquarters. Party leader Rob Jetten said the party office was seriously damaged and warned protesters to "stay away from political parties." According to reports, no one was in the D66 office when the incident happened.

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof condemned the incident as "shocking and unthinkable shameless violence" and emphasized that it was "completely unacceptable."

Right-wing leader Geert Wilders, who leads in polls before the October 29 vote and is called the "Dutch Trump," was invited to speak at the demonstration but did not attend. He also condemned the violence against police as "completely unacceptable" and said it was done by "idiots."

Political extremism researcher Callum Jones, in an interview with SBS, pointed out that Britain's anti-immigration marches were highly similar to similar activities in Australia, Germany, and other countries. Far-right groups are becoming increasingly skilled at using universal social problems like housing difficulties and rising living costs for political mobilization. They cleverly blame these problems on immigrants, claiming that "immigrants have taken away resources and privileges that local residents could have obtained."

Social media has played a key role in spreading far-right ideas and breaking down geographical barriers. Jones explained that "concepts like immigration are very broad, so they can easily be transferred to any country's context." Through platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Telegram, British far-right activists have established close connections with America's MAGA movement, Germany's Alternative for Germany party, and France's National Rally.

"Future Britain" think tank director Katwala pointed out that government and media often directly quote far-right anti-immigration vocabulary, causing the public to gradually become accustomed to these statements, objectively encouraging far-right forces. For example, referring to refugees and asylum seekers as "boat people," demonizing international students, and supporting offshore detention are all political language that has helped fuel far-right movements.

Scholar Gillespie, who studies far-right political violence, further pointed out that when mainstream politicians begin using far-right language frameworks, they are actually paving the way for the normalization of extreme ideas. This linguistic infiltration is more dangerous than direct political propaganda because it subtly changes the public's cognitive framework for understanding problems.

The large-scale demonstration on September 13 was just one climax of Britain's anti-immigration wave, not the end. Various signs indicate that this political storm will continue to affect Britain's political landscape.

Far-right groups have announced they will continue organizing similar activities. Tommy Robinson stated on social media that "this is just the beginning, real change is just starting." Reform UK's approval ratings continue to rise, already posing a substantial threat to both the Conservative and Labour parties.

At the same time, groups supporting immigrants and multiculturalism are also strengthening their organization, preparing for long-term political struggle. British society's divisions are deepening, while political elites constantly adjust their positions under populist pressure, making the country's political direction full of uncertainty.
