Greek mythology mainly narrates stories about the gods, heroes, nature, and cosmic history of the ancient Greeks. Among the most famous tales in Greek myths and legends are those familiar to many, such as the Trojan War, immortalized by the dashing Brad Pitt in Troy, as well as Odysseus’s adventures, Jason's quest for the Golden Fleece, the labors of Heracles, the exploits of Theseus, and the tragedy of Oedipus.

This time, the spotlight is on Zeus, the third king of the gods in Greek mythology.

The earliest written records of Greek mythology can be traced back approximately 3,000 years to the Homeric Epics, which include two classical works: The Iliad and The Odyssey. The central figure in Greek mythology is Zeus, but the first deity was not Zeus. It was Gaia, a goddess born from chaos, whose name means "earth." Gaia created the first male god in the world, Uranus, the god of the sky. Together, they gave birth to eighteen giants, including twelve Titan giants, three Cyclopes, and three Hecatoncheires.

These eighteen giants each had unique traits. The twelve Titan giants were evenly divided into six males and six females, who were both siblings and spouses. The three Cyclopes were all male and skilled in weapon-making, while the Hecatoncheires were genderless and known for their immense strength. However, Uranus imprisoned all his children in the underworld (the realm of darkness), preventing their birth. This enraged Gaia, who called upon her children to rebel. The youngest Titan, Cronus, stepped forward. With Gaia's help, he escaped the underworld and used a steel sickle to castrate Uranus. In his final moments, Uranus cursed Cronus, prophesying that he would one day be overthrown by his own child.

Let's start with the sky. Uranus, Gaia's child, was as vast as the earth itself, lying upon his mother and completely covering her. Every inch of the earth was enveloped by the tightly connected sky. After Gaia gave birth to Uranus, he became both her opposite and her complement. The sky could be seen as another version of the earth, yet also its counterpart. From this point on, the division of yin and yang emerged in the world: the sky was masculine, and the earth was feminine. With the arrival of Uranus, Eros took on a new role. From then on, Gaia no longer gave birth to the things within her by herself, nor did Uranus take on the same task alone. Instead, Eros brought them together, and through the union of the male sky and the female earth, they gave birth to beings distinct from both earth and sky.

Uranus continuously poured his essence into Gaia. This primordial sky's sole activity was love-making. Pressing down on Gaia, his thoughts and actions were consumed by the act of union. Poor Gaia was tightly restrained under him, unable to move, and thus repeatedly became pregnant. However, her children could not leave her womb, as the sky never once parted from the earth, leaving no space between them for the children to be born. Trapped within their mother, the children could not come into the world as independent beings. They were denied their own form and existence, much like Uranus himself had been before his birth, confined within Gaia.

Who are the children of Gaia and Uranus? First, there are the Titans, six brothers and six sisters. The firstborn was Oceanus, who represented the vast, band-like waters encircling the world. His body formed a continuous loop, symbolizing the never-ending cosmic river. The youngest was Cronus, known as "Cunning Cronus."

In addition to these twelve Titans, the union of sky and earth produced another group of formidable offspring: two sets of triplet brothers. The first set were the powerful Cyclopes, characterized by a single eye in the center of their foreheads, earning them the name "One-Eyed Giants." Their names were Brontes (Thunder), Steropes (Lightning), and Arges (Bright). These names hint at their mastery of metallurgy—they were experts in forging thunder and lightning. It was this trio who later created Zeus’s thunderbolts, which became his ultimate weapon in battle.

The second set of triplets were the mighty Hecatoncheires, also known as the "Hundred-Handed Giants." Their names were Cottus, Briareus, and Gyes. These towering figures each had fifty heads and one hundred hands, with incredible strength in every limb.

The Titans, Cyclopes, and Hecatoncheires all possessed unique personalities, unlike the previous generation of deities such as Gaia, Uranus, or Pontus, who were named after natural forces like earth, sky, and water. The Cyclopes, or Kyklopes, embodied the boundless might of thunder, but their power didn’t stem from seeing farther than others. Instead, the single eye in the center of their foreheads radiated a stunning, immobilizing force, much like the lightning bolts they forged for Zeus.
The Hecatoncheires, or Hundred-Handed Giants, were the embodiment of colossal strength. With their massive arms, they could grip, crush, shatter, and overpower any opponent, achieving victory in every battle.Yet, despite their extraordinary powers, all of them—the Titans, Cyclopes, and Hecatoncheires—remained trapped within Gaia. Uranus pressed so tightly against her that there was no space for their children to emerge into the world.

At this time, the universe was shrouded in darkness, as Uranus perpetually pressed against Gaia, covering the earth in an unyielding blanket of starry sky. Gaia’s children continued to multiply, but unable to be born, they remained trapped within her. Their constant pressure and restless movements nearly suffocated Gaia. Finally, Gaia’s fury erupted. She addressed her children, particularly the Titans:

“Listen carefully! Your father has inflicted unbearable harm upon us. His oppressive violence weighs upon me, and we cannot endure this any longer. My children, you must rise up and rebel against your father, the sky!”
The Titans inside Gaia were terrified by her fiery words. After all, Uranus was as vast as Gaia herself, and he pressed so tightly against her that there was no space for them to move, let alone fight him. Only the youngest, Cronus, stepped forward, determined to help Gaia and rebel against his father.

Gaia devised a cruel and cunning plan. To carry it out, she first forged a tool within herself: a sickle made of solid steel. Once it was completed, she handed it to Cronus. Without revealing his intentions, Cronus hid within Gaia’s body, lying in wait at the spot where Uranus and Gaia joined, biding his time for the perfect moment. When Uranus once again poured his essence into Gaia, Cronus seized the opportunity. With his left hand, he firmly grasped his father’s genitals, and with his right hand, he raised the steel sickle high and struck with brutal force, severing them in one swift motion. To avoid any misfortune resulting from this horrific act, he immediately flung the severed organ far away without looking back. The dismembered genitals bled profusely, and the blood spilled onto the earth while the severed flesh eventually fell into the sea. In the moment of his castration, Uranus let out a heart-wrenching scream of agony before retreating from Gaia, fleeing far away. Finally, Uranus fixed himself at the highest point in the cosmos, never to move again.Despite this separation, Uranus’s immense size remained equal to Gaia’s, so no matter where one stood on earth, looking up would always reveal the sky above, mirroring the ground beneath.

Cronus replaced his father as the ruler of the new world and, together with his sister Rhea, had six children: three sons and three daughters. Among them, the most famous were the three male gods: Hades, the god of the underworld; Poseidon, the god of the sea; and Zeus, the king of the heavens. Zeus was the youngest son, but Cronus, fearing his father’s curse, swallowed each of Rhea’s first five children. When Rhea gave birth to Zeus, she tricked Cronus by giving him a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes, which he swallowed instead. The real Zeus was secretly taken to Crete, where he was raised.

As an adult, Zeus sought the help of Metis, the goddess of wisdom and cunning. She prepared a meal laced with an emetic potion, which caused Cronus to vomit up all of Zeus’s siblings. Zeus then united with his brothers and sisters to launch a rebellion against their father. However, their combined strength proved insufficient, prompting Zeus to seek Gaia’s assistance. Gaia advised Zeus to release the imprisoned Cyclopes and Hecatoncheires from the underworld. The Cyclopes, in gratitude, forged three powerful weapons for the brothers: Zeus’s thunderbolt, Poseidon’s trident, and Hades’s invisibility helmet. Armed with these divine tools, Zeus led the gods in a decisive battle against Cronus and the Titans, ultimately defeating them and sealing the Titans away in imprisonment.

However, Gaia was dissatisfied with Zeus’s rule. She united with the underworld and gave birth to the storm giant Typhon to challenge him. After a fierce battle known as the War of Typhon, Zeus led the gods to victory and secured his dominion over the world. From that moment on, he became the supreme ruler of gods and men, cementing his position as the highest deity in Greek mythology.

Zeus, the son of Cronus and Rhea, wields thunder and lightning as his weapons, maintaining order between heaven and earth. The bull and the eagle are his symbols. Zeus’s brothers, Poseidon and Hades, rule over the seas and the underworld, respectively, while the goddess Hera, Zeus’s elder sister, is also his third wife.

Zeus was known for his fiery temper, insatiable lust, and even his bisexuality. It is said that many Olympian gods and Greek heroes were born from his unions with numerous goddesses and mortal women. To get close to these goddesses and women, Zeus would go to any lengths, employing all sorts of tricks and transformations.

(資料來源:greekmyths-greekmythology.com)

On Mount Cithaeron, Zeus encountered Hera and fell in love with her at first sight. He immediately expressed his love for her, but Hera rejected him. However, the persistent and lustful Zeus refused to give up. Transforming himself into a bedraggled cuckoo bird, Zeus flew to Hera, hoping to evoke her sympathy. Moved by the sight of the poor bird with its ruffled feathers, the kind-hearted Hera gently took it into her arms to warm and care for it. Seizing the moment, Zeus revealed his true form and forcefully violated Hera. Overcome with shame and helplessness, Hera ultimately had no choice but to marry Zeus.

Although Zeus was the supreme god of the heavens, he was not immune to mortal emotions and desires. Like any man, he made mistakes—though, of course, this is a bit of a stereotype! In addition to his wife, Hera, Zeus had numerous lovers, including Io, Europa, Semele, Callisto, and Ganymede. However, due to Hera's jealousy, the fate of these lovers was often tragic. Many of them met grim ends, with some being transformed into cows or bears as punishment.

Zeus once transformed himself into his own daughter, Artemis, to seduce Callisto, a beautiful nymph who was part of Artemis's entourage. Under this guise, he caused Callisto to become pregnant. When the chaste Artemis discovered Callisto’s pregnancy, she expelled her from the group of huntresses. The child born from their union was later turned into a bear by the jealous Hera.

Driven by his desires, Zeus transformed into a swan to seduce Leda, the wife of the Spartan king. Their union produced Helen, the famed beauty whose abduction would later spark the Trojan War.

In another instance, Zeus disguised himself as a small bull to abduct Europa, the daughter of Agenor, the king of Phoenicia. He whisked her away to Crete, where he pursued his desires. To further ensure her submission, he even enlisted the help of Aphrodite and Eros. According to mythology, Europa is considered the first European and the ancestor of all Europeans.

According to a prophecy, Zeus learned that he would be killed by his grandson. In an attempt to prevent this fate, he imprisoned his daughter in a sealed chamber. However, one night, Zeus transformed himself into a shower of golden rain, entered the chamber, and united with her, resulting in the birth of his own grandchild.

Zeus, known for his love of power, beauty, and passion, once set his eyes on Ganymede, the youngest son of King Tros of Troy. Ganymede, a young man of extraordinary beauty, was the king’s most beloved child, guarded by soldiers to ensure his safety. Yet, none of this protection could stop Zeus, who, upon seeing the boy, was captivated and consumed by desire. Without hesitation, Zeus transformed into a giant eagle and swept Ganymede away to Mount Olympus.

Unlike many of Zeus's fleeting passions, Ganymede held a unique place in the god’s heart. After seducing him, Zeus did not abandon him but instead elevated him to the prestigious role of cupbearer to the gods. Ganymede’s distinction as a lover lay not only in his gender but also in Zeus's bold decision to bring him to Olympus, despite Hera’s fierce jealousy. Their relationship was open, with Zeus unabashedly flirting with Ganymede, which only fueled Hera’s fiery resentment.

In her wrath, Hera ultimately transformed Ganymede into the constellation Aquarius. To console King Tros for the loss of his son, Zeus gifted him a pair of divine horses, a gesture of both appeasement and gratitude.

(資料來源:wikimedia.org)

In the grand narrative of Greek mythology, Poseidon stands as a god of immense passion and power. As one of the three major Olympian gods, he, along with his brothers Zeus and Hades, overthrew their father Cronus and divided the world's rulership through a lottery. Drawing the domain of the sea, Poseidon established his maritime empire, becoming the absolute master of the oceans.

This sea god possessed not only stunning power but also an extraordinary presence. He built unfathomably deep underwater palaces and tamed magical sea horses with bronze hooves and golden manes. Whenever violent storms raged across the sea's surface, Poseidon would drive his magnificent chariot through towering waves, surrounded by various sea monsters, creating a spectacular maritime spectacle.

Even a powerful god like Poseidon was not immune to complications in his romantic pursuits. Initially, he pursued the sea goddess Thetis, but upon learning she was destined to bear a son more powerful than his father, the shrewd Poseidon withdrew and arranged her marriage to the mortal king Peleus.

His gaze then turned to another beautiful sea goddess - Amphitrite. Her origins vary across mythological accounts: some say she was the daughter of the sea god Nereus and Doris, others claim she was a descendant of Oceanus, while some even suggest she was the daughter of the titan Atlas. Regardless of her lineage, her beauty captivated Poseidon.

On the island of Naxos one day, Amphitrite was playing with her sisters when she was suddenly spotted by Poseidon. This impulsive sea god had no intention of pursuing her through courteous means, instead choosing to abduct her forcibly. Confronted with such a brutal pursuit, Amphitrite attempted to escape by diving into the sea.

But Poseidon was not a god to be easily deterred. He immediately dispatched a dolphin in relentless pursuit. During this chase, Amphitrite could not match the dolphin's agile swimming skills and ultimately surrendered, being brought back almost like a captured prize. Another mythological version presents an even more dramatic scenario: the terrified Amphitrite sought her father's help, only to be discovered and betrayed by a dolphin. As a reward for the dolphin's service, Poseidon elevated it to the constellation Delphinus, transforming it into an eternal celestial legend.

Their married life was equally tumultuous. Poseidon's philandering nature caused Amphitrite significant distress. When he began pursuing Scylla, daughter of the sea monster Phorcys, the queen's jealousy reached its peak. She cast a magical potion into Scylla's bathing waters, transforming her rival into a terrifying monster with six heads and twelve legs. Interestingly, this story varies across different mythological accounts. In the Roman poet Ovid's "Metamorphoses", the poisoner is actually Circe, the golden-eyed witch and daughter of the sun god Helios.

The story of Poseidon and Amphitrite is more than just a passionate and conflict-ridden mythological romance. It reflects the raw desires and emotions of Greek mythological deities. They possessed powers beyond human imagination, yet simultaneously exhibited deeply familiar human weaknesses: impulsiveness, jealousy, possessiveness, and uncontrollable desires.

(資料來源:wikimedia.org)

Hades is often misunderstood as an evil character, but in reality, he is the most upright and diligent god among the Olympians. As the King of the Underworld, he conscientiously manages the souls of the dead, working closely with various underworld deities like Nyx (Night Goddess) and Hermes, ensuring the smooth operation of the underworld.

Compared to his brothers Zeus and Poseidon, who frequently force themselves upon women, Hades can be considered the most normal male god in Greek mythology. Not only does he manage underground mineral resources, but he was also revered by Romans as Plutus, the god of wealth. He kept a famous three-headed dog, guarding the entrance to the underworld, and himself embodied the image of a handsome, wealthy "CEO-like" figure.

Regarding his story with his wife Persephone (Goddess of Spring), there are two versions:

In the first version, Hades seeks advice from his brothers on how to pursue a goddess. Unfortunately, Zeus and Poseidon suggest he simply kidnap her. Following their advice, Hades abducts Persephone to the underworld. This enrages Persephone's mother, Demeter (the Goddess of Agriculture), so much that she lets the earth fall into cold, preventing crops from growing.

Eventually, Hades proposes a solution: Persephone must spend part of each year in the underworld if she eats a few pomegranate seeds. This explains the four seasons: when her daughter is present, the mother is joyful, and the earth is full of life; when her daughter is absent, the earth falls into coldness.

The alternative version involves Aphrodite (Goddess of Love) meddling, having her son Eros (Cupid) shoot Hades with a love arrow, causing him to fall in love with Persephone.

Interestingly, although initially kidnapped, Persephone later discovers that Hades is actually a good husband: charismatic, wealthy, and with a good personality - far superior to the unruly gods of Olympus.
