The M7 exit of Taipei Main Station, the shopping district near Zhongshan MRT Station—these are places that Taipei residents pass through every single day. Yet these familiar locations nearly became scenes of fiery devastation. As police decrypted the planning documents stored in the suspect's cloud drive, the public finally understood what kind of terrifying catastrophe 57-year-old Mr. Yu Jia-chang had sacrificed his life to prevent. This was not a crime of impulse; it was a destructive operation that had been in preparation for six months.
"It is truly unimaginable how catastrophic the consequences would have been if those 25 Molotov cocktails had actually been detonated."
According to police investigations and media reports, 27-year-old suspect Zhang Wen was armed to the teeth. He was not only wearing a tactical vest and carrying both long and short knives, but his suitcase also contained at least 25 Molotov cocktails. In his "cloud-based crime plan," the massacre had a chilling standard operating procedure.
First, he would throw Molotov cocktails and smoke grenades at Taipei Main Station's M7 exit to create panic and start fires. Then, taking advantage of the chaos, he would randomly attack fleeing pedestrians with his knives.
Most terrifyingly, this was only the first stop—he planned to proceed to Nanjing West Road and the shopping district around Zhongshan MRT Station to carry out the same pattern of terrorist attacks all over again.
The reason this nightmare did not fully materialize was entirely due to 57-year-old Mr. Yu Jia-chang.

The incident occurred during the Friday evening rush hour at 5:20 PM local time (9:20 AM Greenwich Mean Time). The assailant threw smoke grenades in the underground passage on basement level one at Taipei Main Station's M7 exit, filling the area with thick smoke and causing widespread panic among commuters.
The assailant subsequently fled through the underground shopping street to nearby Zhongshan Station. He first ran back to the hotel where he was staying to retrieve his weapons, then returned to the street outside Zhongshan Station. Along the way, he continuously threw smoke grenades and indiscriminately attacked pedestrians with a knife. He then broke into the nearby department store "Eslite Nanxi" to hide. After being surrounded by police, the assailant fell from the building and showed no signs of life at the scene. He was pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.
Chang Rong-hsing, Director-General of Taiwan's National Police Agency, stated on the morning of the 20th that the incident resulted in 4 deaths and 11 injuries. The Taipei City Disaster Prevention and Response Office had earlier indicated that some of the injured had gone to hospitals to seek medical treatment on their own.
According to Taiwan's TVBS report, the deceased included a 57-year-old man surnamed Yu, a 37-year-old man surnamed Hsiao, and a 37-year-old man surnamed Wang. The injuries sustained by the other victims included smoke inhalation during initial firefighting efforts, chest puncture wounds, shoulder lacerations, and chin lacerations.

According to official information, the assailant was a 27-year-old Taiwanese man named Zhang Wen, originally from Yangmei District in Taoyuan City.
Based on comprehensive reports from local media outlets including the Central News Agency, ETtoday, and the Liberty Times, Zhang Wen had been wanted by the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office for "obstruction of military service." He moved into a studio apartment on Gongyuan Road in Zhongzheng District, Taipei City in January of this year. However, just two days before committing the crime—on December 17th—he rented another room at a hotel on Nanjing West Road in Datong District, Taipei City.
Before the random stabbing incident occurred, the suspect had set fires at three different locations in Zhongshan District on the same afternoon, causing damage to multiple cars and motorcycles. Police stated that Zhang allegedly proceeded to Taipei Main Station to throw smoke grenades because his serial arson had failed to attract attention from either the police or the public. He then returned to the hotel on Nanjing West Road before taking knives and smoke grenades to the Eslite department store on Nanjing West Road to commit the attack.
Police subsequently searched the hotel where Zhang had been staying and discovered one knife, approximately 25 Molotov cocktails, a raincoat, a black hat, and two tablet computers. They will conduct further investigation into his motive for the crime.
Police also stated that based on Zhang's modus operandi and the multiple hiding spots he had prepared in advance, they believe he originally had no intention of taking his own life. It is suspected that he accidentally fell from the building while being pursued by police.
The Taipei City Criminal Investigation Division has established a counter-terrorism response center to clarify the suspect's motive and investigate whether there were any accomplices.
According to Mirror Media, after Zhang fell to his death, his parents stated at the hospital that they had not been in contact with their son for more than two years and were unaware of his recent situation. His older brother, who lives in Kaohsiung, also said he knew nothing about his younger brother's recent circumstances. The family expressed shock and helplessness over the incident.

At that critical moment, Zhang had already thrown a smoke grenade and was preparing to open the suitcase full of Molotov cocktails to start his arson attack. In that split second, Mr. Yu did not choose to flee. Instead, he rushed forward to stop the attacker. Although this resulted in Mr. Yu being stabbed multiple times by Zhang and ultimately losing his life due to his severe injuries, it was precisely because of his desperate intervention that the suspect's planned sequence of "throwing Molotov cocktails followed by random attacks" was forcibly interrupted. Zhang was compelled to flee in a panic. The suspect eventually died after randomly killing more civilians.
This incident resulted in 15 people being sent to hospitals, 2 in critical condition, and 4 deaths including the suspect. Despite the heavy casualties, if Mr. Yu had not physically blocked that suitcase at the very first moment—if those dozens of Molotov cocktails had detonated in the enclosed underground passage, combined with the subsequent planned attacks at Zhongshan Station—the death toll would likely have been dozens of times higher than the current figure.
Currently, members of the public have spontaneously placed flowers in the Zhongshan Station shopping district to pay their respects, and students have written letters honoring this hero who blocked the knife. Forensic expert Dr. Gao Da-cheng analyzed that the suspect's "methods were professional and he intended to escape," indicating that this was absolutely not an impulsive crime.

The random killing incident in Taipei has not yet subsided, and today another sensitive issue has emerged—one of the victims who was stabbed is a person living with HIV. Many people have begun to worry: "Could the other people who were subsequently cut by the same knife also have been infected?"
The Ministry of Health and Welfare has confirmed that this victim is indeed an HIV-positive individual, but the person is currently on stable medication with a very low viral load. The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control emphasized that even if there was blood contact at the scene, the risk of indirect transmission through a knife blade is extremely low, estimated at less than one in ten thousand.
Furthermore, as long as preventive medication is administered within the golden window of 72 hours, the probability of infection can be reduced to nearly zero.
The authorities have already initiated a post-exposure consultation program along with publicly funded medication, and anyone in need can receive assistance. There is no need for excessive panic.
This time, the media directly disclosed that "a certain victim is an HIV-positive individual," which has sparked heated discussion online. Some people believe that the public should know the truth so that other victims can assess their own risk. However, others argue that doing so is too cruel to the person involved and could easily cause secondary harm or even trigger discrimination.
In fact, the medical community has long made this clear: HIV is primarily transmitted through high-risk behaviors or when blood directly enters the body. There is absolutely no need to worry about transmission through ordinary daily contact. Disclosing someone's medical history involves privacy rights, and society should show more empathy rather than conducting witch hunts or attaching stigmatizing labels.
UG Tea (Le Ji), a hand-shaken beverage brand, drew backlash after its owner personally brought drinks and a bouquet to Eslite Nanxi in Taipei’s Zhongshan shopping district. The original intention was to mourn the innocent victims who were injured or killed in an attack by Chang Wen. However, because the drinks displayed prominent brand logos, the gesture was questioned as product placement marketing, triggering widespread condemnation across online communities.
In response, UG’s owner—MediaTek International Chairman Cheng Kai-lung—along with General Manager Chen Sheng-chung, convened an emergency press briefing today (the 21st) and publicly bowed to apologize.
Chairman Cheng Kai-lung said, “This incident is deeply tragic in itself, yet my inappropriate actions blurred the true focus that should have been paid attention to, further causing unnecessary public controversy and misunderstanding. I am willing to take full responsibility and offer my most sincere apologies to the public.”
Cheng emphasized that today’s briefing was not an attempt to make excuses. He said he had heard all voices from the media and social platforms, humbly accepted all criticism and doubts, and once again apologized to everyone. He also pledged that in any future public setting or social incident, he will respond to society’s expectations with a more cautious, respectful, and mature attitude.

(資料來源:trins.org)
As random attack incidents continue to occur frequently around the world, critical care physician Dr. Huang Hsuan wrote on his Facebook page that from a public health perspective, the repeated occurrence of such incidents itself indicates that these are not coincidences but rather the result of collective mental health imbalance.
Dr. Huang stated that when the same type of random violence occurs repeatedly across different countries, different cultures, and different administrative systems, it is no longer simply a criminal case. Citing the definition used in public health, he emphasized: "If something occurs repeatedly, can be explained by risk factors, and can be prevented, then it is not an accident."
Looking back at most cases, what is commonly seen in perpetrators beforehand is not a sudden loss of control, but rather a long-term accumulation of conditions: persistent psychological stress, social isolation and marginalization, intense feelings of failure and deprivation, and a state of wanting to seek help but not knowing how to ask.
High-Risk Individuals Are Often Not in the Healthcare System
Dr. Huang pointed out that truly high-risk individuals are often not within the healthcare system. These people typically have no psychiatric diagnosis, do not meet the criteria for any subsidies or follow-up programs, and appear to function normally on the surface while privately struggling to hold on. He stated bluntly that the current system only takes care of those who have already been diagnosed while ignoring those who are on the verge of breaking down. This is precisely the biggest blind spot in public health.
Social Isolation: The Most Underestimated Risk Factor
Regarding the issue of social isolation, Dr. Huang believes this is the most central yet most underestimated background factor. He explained that when family support, community connections, and job security collapse one by one, a person may still be alive, still going to work, and still talking, but psychologically there is no longer any place capable of bearing their emotions. Isolation does not immediately cause violence, but it slowly severs all paths back to rationality.
Dr. Huang analyzed that most random attack incidents do not stem from hatred toward a specific target, but rather represent an uncontrolled reaction against society as a whole. Strangers are simply the most accessible targets at that moment and the outlet that requires no explanation.
He also reminded the public that research has repeatedly shown that media coverage that is excessively detailed, heroizing, or emotionally sensationalized can trigger copycat effects. For psychologically vulnerable groups, this is not information—it is a dangerous behavioral demonstration.
Truly Effective Prevention Means Early Intervention
Dr. Huang emphasized that truly effective prevention strategies have never been solely about containment after the fact, but rather about early intervention. This includes destigmatizing mental health, enhancing the early identification capabilities of frontline personnel, establishing community support and companionship networks, and creating help-seeking channels that do not require a diagnosis or a label. He appealed: "The earlier we catch someone, the lower the cost, and the fewer the tragedies."
Conclusion: Tragedies Have Long Been Brewing in Collective Neglect
Dr. Huang concluded at the end of his post that every random attack incident serves as a reminder to society: if we only address the outcome without addressing how a person was pushed to that point, the tragedy will simply happen again with a different person in a different place. He reiterated that random attack incidents may appear on the surface to be public safety issues, but in essence they represent a failure of the public mental health system. All tragedies that seem sudden have actually been slowly brewing in places where they were collectively ignored.
